Derngate
Derngate is an ancient road now linking the Guildhall with Victoria Promenade at the point where the old town wall once stood. Although many of the fine town houses still remain (including 78 Derngate, listed Grade II*which was refashioned by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the model engineer WJ Bassett-Lowke around 1916), the original United Counties bus station and the central GPO sorting office are no longer present. The former being replaced by the Derngate Centre, and the latter by a gym and offices.
